Canopy mechanism
This is the traditional style which operates in vertical tracks, when open, the door forms a canopy with approximately one third of the door projecting outside of the garage.

Retractable mechanism
This has horizontal tracks which carry the door into the garage space, with the whole door almost completely inside when open. Ideally suited to automation.
